Diabetes:

According to the Diabetes Research Institute, Type 2 Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States. The CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control) National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2020 shows that cases of diabetes have risen to an estimated 34.2 million. This is about 1 in less than 10 Americans and getting worse fast. The number is projected to rise to 39.7 million (13.9%) in 2030 and up to 60.6 million (17.9%) in 2060. Increases in diabetes are always troubling, but it is most concerning when we start seeing it an early age. This is because of “the potential to create a cascade of poor health outcomes,” according to Dr. Giuseppina Imperatore at the CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation. She adds that “compared to people who develop diabetes in adulthood, youth are more likely to develop diabetes complications at an earlier age and are at higher risk of premature death.” Diabetes changes the lives of people drastically, and the earlier it starts the more painful the course.

Is this inevitable? NO!!!  So, what is the problem?

Research is consistently showing that lifestyle is the main driver for this terrible and fast-paced growth. Studies show that the standard western diet promotes the increase of diabetes and associated lifestyle diseases. It is very likely that several of you reading this right now have diabetes, prediabetes or know someone who does. You are also most likely aware of the horrible complications associated with it. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease leading to dialysis, infections, a compromised immune system, cancer, neuropathy, erectile dysfunction, amputations, gastrointestinal problems and so much more. In fact, data from the National Heart Association shows greater than 65% of people with diabetes will die from some sort of heart disease or stroke. This is terrible news!!! Added to the unhealthy diet is a lack of exercise which contributes to the complications.

Yet, hope is not lost. There is hope!!
